On Saturday, December 21, Wal-Mart's Video Download site shut down after being live for nearly 11 months.
Although most folks won't care, or are even aware Wal-Mart even offered the service, the news struck me with disappointment and sadness. I played a large part in bringing the site to life, working in various testing capacities for the many months leading up to its launch as well as supporting the site through late this year.
It's a shame. Some might argue about the business model itself (pricing, DRM, rent vs. buy, etc.) but I feel like the site never got a chance. Outside of a press release during the launch of the site and a few title-specific promotional tie-ins, the site never got any marketing support.
I cannot complain too much -- working on that project gained me invaluable experience, and I am proud of the work our teams accomplished. I hope the other team members who put in thousands of hours into its creation and maintenance feel the same way.
